Comparing – Wisdom from Children’s Books

I found myself in the middle of a teaching moment with my daughter yesterday. She was frustrated with a drawing that wasn’t turning out like she had planned. She threw her marker down in a fit of rage and sunk into her chair.

As I explained to her about how sad our lives are when we spend all our time comparing ourselves and our abilities to other people, I found a treasure trove of wisdom pouring out of me that I didn’t even know I had. The wisdom all came from children’s books that I believe echo Truths that originate from God.

Since we had read the books together, and since they were great memorable stories, I was able to explain to my 5 yr old her unique worth in a way that her heart would understand.

A side note, my favorite thing about teaching in this way is when I hear my kids, on separate occasions, encouraging each other or their little friends with the same stories. It is melt-my-heart-wonderful to know they understand something enough to teach someone else.

Here’s the three books that are worth reading. Feel free to recommend other children book titles in the comments. I’m sure we’d all benefit.

Ish

Courage of the Blue Boy (This one is a new find at the library. Oh wow do I love it!)

I went to the library (really I ran over there) to get Ish based on your recommendation. It was such a good, inspiring book for me. My kids loved it too. We have that Winnie-the-Pooh I see in your picture. It is a favorite of mine full of little hidden bits of wisdom. Another favorite of mine is “The Quiltmakers Gift” by Jeff Brunbeau. Someone gave it to me because I quilt, but it has since become a favorite.
