Shredding Fear

So thanks to my friend Allison, I ended up with a 30 Day Shred video. I am enjoying the full body workout that can be done in 20 minutes in my own home. But, I must confess, I get nauseous every single time before I start it. Nauseous like I used to get when my basketball coach would blow the whistle and have us line up on the baseline for sprints. I guess, truth be known, I get scared.

I’ve learned something from this shred video that I think is worth sharing. There is a great quote from Jillian, that gets my adrenaline flowing every time I hear it. “This is the feeling of fear leaving your body.” Of course she’s referencing that “intense burning, I’m going to die” feeling that workouts can bring. But I think about how freeing it is to have fear leave my body. I can mentally picture that. I can feel it fleeing. I think this must be what it’s like when we fully realize the power of having the Holy Spirit flowing through us. That intense power. That very idea that perfect love does cast out all fear (1 John 4:18), and that God did not give us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

Prior to starting this workout video I’ve been journaling a lot about fear. This is due in part to what I learned at church last week, which was focusing on snippets from the movie Coach Carter. Want to see some of my list?

I fear…

  • being forever cranky and uptight
  • my etsy shop never being updated
  • debt and never getting out of it
  • teaching
  • messing up my kids
  • chaos
  • letting go
  • art journaling
  • not feeling strong
  • long term projects
  • losing control
  • disappointing God
  • living only in my small story
  • dancing
  • owning a home
  • buying a car
  • evil
  • missing out
  • missing my life purpose
  • being wrong
  • losing those I love
  • making the wrong decision
  • early mornings (ha!)

Just a few things. But seriously, when I’m working out and pushing through the times when it hurts, I realize I’m facing fears. And facing fears in one area of my life really does translate to other areas. Suddenly I start tapping into a hidden reserve of energy I didn’t realize was there. I begin to let the Holy Spirit flow through me instead of inhibiting. I begin to regain some hope. Maybe, just maybe, I don’t have to be prisoner to this fear anymore.

Check out this quote:

…And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. —Marianne Williamson

So yea to Jillian for liberating others. And yea for those of us who will not only feel fear leaving our bodies, but will also let other people know, it can leave theirs too.

Jillian is shredding me in more ways than one it seems.

Awesome thoughts…and from a workout DVD, no less! :) It IS really empowering to visualize fear leaving the body…makes us feel invincible!! Glad you are getting so much more out of it than just a kick-butt workout.

Wanna arm wrestle? ;)

Max Lucado has a new book out…bookstore locally has it on sale for $18 and you get a free MP3 download I believe of the whole book, right away with payment…hardcopy of the book comes on Sept 8th…name of the book? FEARLESS:Imagine Your Life Without Fear….(I see no prerequisites to ownership…don’t have to be able to bench press 250 lbs or run in place for an hour) – smiles, mom
