My 5-year-old was very “taken” by the lady on the front cover of this book that we got out at the library. She wanted to know how she was made. I told her we could make her.
What followed was a nite and a subsequent morning of cutting, pasting and drawing our own paper-pieced creations.
I actually found myself getting really into it. They would bring me paper and I would help them cut out whatever they needed: ties, bows, piggy-tales, etc. Then they would glue them together and add some finishing touches with crayons or marker. Zoe also had me start drawing the bows and she would cut them out herself. Good practice for cutting on the lines.

And then another a-ha moment hit. We were discussing how we wanted to see all that we had created at one time. I realized that we had already created an art gallery in our dining room and all we had to do was switch out the “show.” I thought, when I made the art gallery, we might switch out a picture here or there. I never thought, until the paper-piecing project came along, about putting up entirely new art on every clip.

And so, the Steward Art Gallery is now showing, our rendition of “And to Name But Just a Few: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue.”
I might add this book also made me want to do a unit study on colors, and devote one full day to each color…exploring it fully. That’s jotted down in a “things we simply must do in our life-learning” list. This flickr group will prove fun and helpful too!
