I believe it was last new years that Ali Edwards started a thing on her blog where she picked a word for herself for the new year. This year I’m jumping in on that challenge.
My word for 2008 is “free.” This word has been my heartbeat for awhile. I created a whole collection at Scrap Girls awhile back with that theme.

And I remember embracing that word for the first time when I was taking a college class by John Eldredge, author of The Sacred Romance and founder of Ransomed Heart Ministries.
I taught a class at Scrap Girls called “Guard Your Heart” that stemmed from this idea, of being “free” enough to follow your dreams and be who your heart longs for you to be.
So I have been heading this direction for some time. But it is different to casually toss around a word then to make a conscious effort to passionately pursue it. 2008 is my year to passionately pursue being “free.”
Free from guilt, free from letting what others think determine my actions, free from fear, free from my inner-critic. When my heart tells me something I want to feel “free” enough to go after it.
And I think it’s fitting that this morning I read this:
“Let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love. This is the only way we’ll know we’re living truly, living in God’s reality. It’s also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it. For God is greater than our worried hearts and knows more about us than we do about ourselves.
“And friends, once that’s taken care of and we’re no longer accusing or condemning ourselves, we’re bold and FREE.” (1 John 3:18-21, Message Bible)
To help give me some accountability in pursuing my word “free,” I’ve decided to take part in a different kind of weekly challenge that Sarah Bowen is posting every Monday on her blog. It’s all about being the “best me.” You might want to check it out here.
